There are so many different scenarios that yield an amazing story when it comes to engagement. Whether it be how the ring was chosen, the elaborate (or not) proposal, or immediately what followed after- it seems that this tradition is built around creating memories that can be shared with friends and family. Even if you were proposed to on a sidewalk on your way to get a slice of pizza- you're still so excited to share that story with everyone.
However, there is a group of stories that tend to not be asked about. In the hustle and bustle of coordinating an engagement, it seems natural not to dive too deep into the history of it all, but aren't you curious about the history of your diamond shape? Today we are kicking of a new blog series about the history behind the most popular diamond shapes today!
Marquise Diamond History
This diamond shape is truly unique and was most popular in the 1970's. Like all trends, the marquise cut diamond has begun to make it's way back onto everyone's diamond option list for their custom engagement rings- and rightfully so with its elongated, delicate shape and soft spready center. Just like the emerald cut diamond, there is something slightly understated about the marquise diamond. While it doesn't command the same type of attention that say a round brilliant does, the marquise sparkles in light, even curiously so, which is perhaps what sent me on a mission to find out more.
We have two people to thank for the marquise cut diamond, which originated in the 18th century. Like all great stories, it began in costume at a masked ball in Versailles when King Louis XV of France, dressed as a domino, met Jean Antoinette Poisson who was dressed as a plant. King Louis XV was so taken by her that she became his chief mistress and was given a place in his court as the Marquise de Pompadour (most well known as Madame de Pompadour). She was very influential in the arts and was even an artist herself and was said to have had much influence in King Louis's court. King Louis went on to commission a jeweler to create a design and shape of diamond that looked most like her lips, and thus the marquise cut was born! It's shape and cut has been perfected through the ages and now features 58 brilliant sparkling facets.Custom Ring Options

It's especially similar to the oval in the way that it appears larger than it's carat weight due to it's shape- widening in the belly of the stone and tapering down at the wings. The marquise features a delicate and defined point on either side which is it's most famous quality! Symmetry is especially important for the marquise cut diamond as well as proportion - you don't want the diamond to look too long or too short and wide. Balance is key here! We also would stress not to opt for a marquise cut that is too shallow.
