Are lab-grown diamonds less expensive than natural diamonds?
Yes! Lab-created diamonds are 50-70% less expensive than their natural diamond
counterparts. This comes from the fact that natural diamonds are a natural, finite resource
thus making them more expensive. Since there is no cap on how many lab diamonds can be
made, they can be priced lower than natural diamonds of the same quality.
Are lab-created diamonds real diamonds?
Yes! Lab diamonds are just as real as natural diamonds. They possess all the same
properties and qualities as a natural diamond. In fact, it is impossible to tell the difference
between a natural diamond and a lab-grown diamond just by looking at them. The only
difference between the two is where they were formed.
Are all lab grown diamonds flawless?
Just like natural diamonds, lab-created diamonds are all different and vary in quality. The
same way some lab diamonds are bigger than others, some lab diamonds will have more
visible inclusions than others. At Lauren B, all our lab diamonds are SI1 and above.
Do lab grown diamonds have fluorescence?
While it is possible that some lab diamonds can have fluorescence, most do not. Since they
are formed in a controlled lab environment, fluorescence can be avoided. However, all
lab-grown diamonds at Lauren B are fluorescent-free.
Are lab diamonds a good investment?
For clients looking for a real diamond and don’t have the budget for a natural diamond, a
lab-grown diamond is the best choice. As with any other type of gemstone, resale values
can vary over time following market fluctuations and innovations in technology and
resource changes. Since lab diamonds are still fairly new, there is also more uncertainty
about their future value.
Can lab-created diamonds be GIA Certified?
Yes! In fact, all the lab diamonds at Lauren B are GIA or IGI certified.
Are there fancy color lab-grown diamonds?
Of course! The same way natural diamonds get their fancy coloring, lab-grown diamonds
get theirs–just in a lab setting and in a shorter amount of time. Scientists can manipulate
the lab diamond growth process giving them more control over the diamond’s dominant
color.
Could lab-grown diamonds test as moissanite?
If the diamond tester you are using is working properly, lab-grown diamonds should not
test as moissanite. Additionally, it is easy to spot the difference between moissanite and
lab diamonds as moissanite is more refractive than lab diamonds and will emit more of a
"rainbow" flash.
Can you tell the difference between lab diamonds and natural diamonds?
To the naked eye, no one can tell the difference between a lab-created diamond and a
natural diamond—not even a trained gemologist! Only with the proper equipment and
training can someone tell the difference.
Are lab-grown diamonds as durable as natural diamonds?
Everything about lab-grown diamonds is exactly the same as natural diamonds except
where they were formed, including their durability. Both natural and lab-created diamonds
come in at a 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness making them the strongest gemstone and
can only be scratched by another diamond. NOTE: diamonds are not indestructible, just
scratch resistant.
Can lab diamonds be appraised?
Yes, just like everything else at Lauren B, lab diamonds can be appraised and insured.
Are lab-created diamonds the same thing as cubic zirconia and/or moissanite?
No, Lab diamonds are real diamonds! Lab diamonds are not cubic zirconia or moissanite, they are 100% diamonds.
