Finger Coverage: Which diamonds are best for bigger hands and longer fingers?

Let’s face it: some of us are blessed with long fingers which mean more room to take up from knuckle to knuckle with the engagement rings. Certain diamond cuts tend to have a smaller face up appearance on the hand while other shapes can take up a nice amount of room and give a very graceful appearance.   The question of square vs elongated diamond is one of the first things you should consider when choosing your engagement ring.  Once you choose that, it will be easier to narrow down your choices and select your engagement ring.

Elongated cuts like pear, oval, marquise, and emerald cut are ideal for this look. Each of these diamonds take up more space vertically than horizontally giving the illusion of a bigger diamond and more space used along the finger.

marquise-long-fingerMarquise cut will take up the most length because of the pointed shape on both ends with pear shape coming in at second for most surface area. Ovals have a beautiful elongated shape as well and the rounded edges give it a very special brilliance. This cut looks the most graceful on the hand and can give a lengthened appearance to shorter/wider hands as well. Elongated radiant cuts and elongated emerald will have a similar effect too.

Unless done in a bigger carat size, round, cushion and asscher cuts tend to look best on more petite hands. Because they are fuller horizontally they might not take up enough space vertically to give you the larger illusion you might want.  Adding a halo to these diamond cuts will help you achieve that look so do not rule them out just yet.

Another thing to note is that it is not only the diamond shape that takes up more “Real estate” on the finger. Setting styles place a big part as well. A split style band will take up more room on the finger. See RS-177

We are noted for our halos and trying any diamond shape with a halo around it will instantly make the diamond look larger and give the illusion of more occupied space on the hand.  It is recommended to try on each different shape and style of ring so you can get a great feel for what you like and the style that looks best on your particular hand.  Ask Lauren B and we would be happy to show you everything!
