Re-setting your Engagement Ring: what can you do with your old mounting?

There are endless reasons as to why you would want to re-set your center diamond into a new mounting?  Tired of your old setting, not happy with the quality of the ring, was not a design you truly wanted (despite the best intentions of your partner) or fell head over heals with a design you saw on Lauren B's Instagram account ;) When updating a ring or remounting your center diamond, there is always the question: well what can I do with my old mounting (setting)?! There are a number of different options, some naturally more cost-effective than others.

The first option is to keep it! Some of us like to plan ahead and think in terms of taking care of those we love, so keeping your old mounting to make a gift for a loved one, or helping your soon-to-be son-in-law marry your daughter, is one sentimental option. While this means you won’t get anything back for it, it’s the thought that counts, right?

The next option is to keep it for yourself and have it set with colored gemstones. Go ahead: be selfish. Drool over sapphires and garnets and amethysts that we can show you to turn your old mounting into a beautiful, colored-stone ring that is of course a much lower cost than another diamond. Use your birthstone or ask us about rare and unique collector’s type stones that nobody has ever heard of, but will make them do a double-take. There are around 130 minerals that are able to be cut into gemstones, so the options and price ranges are endless.  This will allow you to keep your ring which may hold sentimental value and wear it as an alternative to your new engagement ring.

Finally, you can sell it of course. Depending on the condition of the ring, the finger size, the size, quality, and carat weight of the other stones in the ring, and potentially name brand, you will be able to get a price or trade-in value for your old mounting. Because many rings are custom made, custom sized, and are well-loved, sentimental pieces, some companies will not give you as much as you would hope for your old mounting. It can equal out to gold/platinum weight and diamond weight pricing, which is less than retail, but given all of the factors listed above, it may be a good option for you.

It can be difficult to let go of something with so much personal value attached to it, but Lauren B can help guide you toward the best option for what to do with your piece, and make sure you are well educated in all the different options.  Don’t hesitate to visit us at the store, give us a call, or shoot us an email!
