Rose gold engagement rings are definitely the trending metal color choice for the past few years. However, it shouldn't come as a surprise that natural yellow gold is making a serious come back!
In the mid 1900's, yellow gold was the standard when it came to engagement rings. You would not find many rings made during that time in a white metal color. White metals like white gold and platinum soared in popularity for its cool, sleek appeal. Even today it is safe to say that white metal colors dominate. However, yellow gold is the classic gold color and in 2018 we are seeing it take over engagement rings.
What is Yellow Gold?
Pure gold is yellow, but it is too soft to be used in most jewelry. To strengthen it, it’s combined with other metal alloys. As different amounts of alloys are used, the karatage, or proportion of pure gold per measure, changes. Therefore you have 24k, 18k, 14k, 9k etc... gold options. For engagement rings we recommend 14k or 18k. 14k, because it has more alloys, will be tougher and more suitable for daily wear and tear.
Who Should Consider Yellow Gold?
The best to know if yellow gold is right for you is by trying it on! Yellow gold looks amazing and very bright on many different skin tones. Rose gold appears a bit more understated by blending in with most skin tones. Yellow gold has a bright appearance to it and stands out on almost every skin tone making it a real winner.
Does Yellow Gold Affect Diamond Color?
Setting a diamond into a yellow gold setting can lend just a bit of the metal color to the diamond itself. When you think about it, the setting being yellow would create a warmer appearance for the center stone. If this is a concern then consider having the prongs of your ring done in white gold. This will intensify the color of the center diamond. Additionally if you want the setting to be all yellow gold you can also opt for a higher diamond color to combat and color transfer.
Note: We have heard some people say that because yellow gold will change the color of the center then it is alright to go for a lower diamond color for your stone. We do not feel this is true. Any yellow already within the diamond will be intensified by the yellow metal color therefore creating a darker color saturation. This is why you might set a fancy yellow diamond in a yellow gold setting for more color intensity
