Summer Guide: When To (And When to Not!) Wear Your Engagement Ring

Finally, summer has arrived! That means: time to find a pool and lay next to it. There are plenty of wonderful activities that the summer is known for and here's a run down of how to care for your ring through it all.

When To Remove Your Engagement Ring

In the beginning, it's so hard to take off your sparkly new friend, we know! However, it's best to get into the habit of proper ring care early on.
Yard Work/ Gardening - Working in the yard will likely not lead to any damage of your ring- though it will certainly make it very dirty! Of course there's that off chance that you do damage it with a gardening tool, so it's best to leave your ring somewhere safe before hitting the yard.
Swimming In The Ocean - We've all watched way too many pairs of our favorite sunglasses float away in the ocean, so it's safer to keep your ring out of here as well. The exception to this rule: if fits properly and is very snug on your finger. Anytime that your finger is wet, it will be much easier for your ring to make its way off.
Cleaning Dishes - Whether you're cleaning up after a luau or just a normal night at home, it's best to remove your ring when tending to dishes, pots, and pans. Similar to gardening, this is mostly to keep your ring looking clean! However, it's happened that a pan comes down at the right angle and strikes and chips the top of a diamond, so it's best to err on the side of caution.
Exercising - Any hand-heavy activities will be hard on your jewelry. For example, lifting weights and hitting downward facing dog are big no-nos with your ring on. While your ring likely won't show any immediate signs of damage, with time and repetition, stone loss chances will increase. As for you runners, you're pretty safe here but with the increase in blood flow you'll notice your fingers swell which can be a little uncomfortable! Proceed with caution here.

Where To Put Your Engagement Ring When It's Not Being Worn

Grab a couple ring dishes from your favorite store. Anthropologie is a store that sells ring dishes at a reasonable price (and they have some pretty cute ones!). Put one next to your kitchen sink, one next to your bathroom sink, and one next to your bed. That way you can keep your ring safe when it's not on!

Special Note for Doctors and Nurses: Putting on and taking off rubber gloves will loosen pave set diamonds and the center stone in your engagement ring. If you don't feel comfortable leaving it in a locker, loop a necklace chain through your band and wear it on your person.
