Class is back in session! For this diamond tutorial, we will be discussing the radiant cut diamond. Known for its beautiful brilliance and versatility of shape – as it comes in both square and elongated options! – the radiant is getting more and more notoriety among diamond trends. Because its popularity is somewhat recent, it can often be difficult for clients to understand what can make or break a good quality radiant cut diamond. As a buyer, it is important to understand how to maximize on that special sparkle and get the most bang for your buck!
Watch this video and follow along with the details below:
First is a side by side comparison of two radiant cut diamonds of equal carat weight and similar color/clarity; however that is where the comparisons end. The G color/VS2 clarity stone on the right is from our own exclusive inventory, and is a specially cut radiant that will maximize face-up appearance and also distribute sparkle evenly throughout the stone. This diamond measures 8.8 x 6.4 millimeters, dwarfing the competitor's G color/VVS2 clarity stone (something you would probably find on many online websites) which comes in at 7.9 x 6.3 millimeters.
How is that possible since they both weight 2 carats? Take a look at the profile view and you will see how the stone on the left is heavier and contains more faceting underneath, which is done to preserve carat weight and gives a "lumpier" appearance. The diamond to the right is cut very precisely underneath as to not hide any weight and ensure that the surface area is spread to its fullest extent without compromising on brilliance.
The next part shows the poorly cut G color/VVS2 stone alone so you can clearly see how inferior the sparkle is. This is caused by the obvious “windows”, or dead spots in the stone where light leaks out and reveals a duller appearance. Of course, this is something you want to always avoid in a diamond purchase as it is makes for a less attractive ring!
Finally, the third segment is our diamond shown by itself, and you can plainly see how the stone sparkles across all areas of its surface. These types of radiant cuts are definitely more difficult to find (and there may be a slight pricing premium to pay for them) but it is well worth it!
These two diamonds would be relatively similar in price. At first glance you might opt for the stone on the left because it has a higher clarity grade at VVS, but you would be sadly mistaken. The stone on the right from #LaurenB is superior in all facets (literally and figuratively!) and these are the type of radiant cut diamonds that comprise our collection.
Here at Lauren B, we have all sizes starting at .75 carats all the way up to 4 carats spanning various color and clarity combinations. As you can see, we are very particular about what is deemed suitable for our selection, and can always help you choose the perfect radiant cut diamond for your engagement ring needs!
